Why Do I Need to See My Credit Report?

You’ve heard of denial, right? When it comes to your finances, it’s best to face facts. Reviewing your credit report once a year is a great way to understand what potential lenders — or insurers, landlords, and even employers — are learning about you.

Three major credit bureaus — Experian, TransUnion and Equifax — use data from lenders and a few other sources to create your credit report and resulting credit score. Sometimes, data can contain errors. If you catch mistakes, they can be confirmed, corrected and removed from your report.

Checking your credit report is a good way to catch fraud or identity theft, too. Look for names, lines of credit or delinquent accounts you don’t recognize. If you see something odd, report it immediately.
